Music Ministry
At St. James we sing! Our music ministry, made up of professional and amateur musicians, is committed to:
- serving the community by inspiring full and joyful participation in worship through congregational singing and reflective listening.
- reiterating God’s Word in song.
- moving the congregation, through music, closer to God by helping them access their hearts and souls.
- encouraging spiritual reflection, growth, prayerfulness, thankfulness, and a sense of connectedness/community through music.
- creating an environment which draws people into a deeper experience of the mystery celebrated.

We believe that the primary instrument of the church is the voice of the congregation. Our focus is on communal singing - not on performance. Our goal, through the leadership of the music director, cantor or song leader, is to provide a firm foundation on which the community can feel comfortable and confident in raising their voices together.

What do we sing?
At all liturgies, songs are carefully selected to reiterate and reinforce God’s Word and to offer opportunities to praise and worship our God together. Music is also selected to reflect the theme and tone of each liturgical season. We are committed to thoroughly teaching songs so that they become familiar to the community, and to sing in keys that are comfortable for the average voice. At St. James you won’t find a soprano soloist singing in a super-high key, inadvertently discouraging others from joining in! Our liturgical music embraces a variety of styles, from traditional to gospel, contemporary to chant. (Click here to learn more)
