Lectors

What does a Lector Do?
How can I become one?
As a Lector your voice becomes the voice of Christ. Just as He taught the parables and captured the attention of all those listening, so will you. You do not just “read” the scripture. You do not just “say” the words printed on the page. You proclaim His words. Your voice echoes Christ’s voice in our ears, in our hearts and in our minds. As a Lector, you will fill us with the word, or words, of strength and guidance we need for that day and that week.
Being a Lector is different from the other ministries. You commit to just arriving 15 to 20 minutes early for mass. And you have commit to a ministry, much like our Pastor and Clergy, in which you must prepare for mass prior to coming. You also commit to taking time away from your day, your family and your friends to read and listen to God’s words before ever proclaiming them to the rest of us; preparing for both the First and Second Reading in the event that you may be the only lector for that mass.
Prior to mass, if there are two lectors, the lector for the first reading also begins mass by welcoming us all. There are copies of this Welcoming located with the sign-in book. The lector for the second reading is responsible for reading the Prayers of the Faithful after the Creed is prayed if there if not a Deacon present. To show respect and reverence, like at communion, please bow at the base of the steps before ascending to the ambo or lectern. There is a fold out step at both the lectern and ambo which you may let down if you feel you would like to be higher at either position. You are welcome to sit wherever you like in the pews, however, it is helpful if you sit somewhat close to the front of the church. However, if you are the only lector, please sit in the chair, behind the lectern at the glass of the Little Church, to wait for the Responsorial Psalm to be proclaimed. The Acolyte will know prior to mass who is present and in what capacity each minister needs to help.
Each November, a new Lector Workbook will be available for you in the Sacristy. I will be sure to notify you of its arrival. During the coming months I will send information that may further your knowledge and interest within the Lector ministry and as a follower of Christ. I will also notify you of other opportunities to serve such as Holy Days. If you would like to be a lector please contact me, adykes.stjamesparish@gmail.com, or call the Parish Center at 375-5887. I will arrange for you to me with another lector who can mentor you so that you feel comfortable in this ministry.
